Constitution Plaza

Constitution Plaza, known locally as the Zocalo, features a massive stone pavement centered on a giant Mexican flag that rises above the surrounding colonial architecture. This wide open expanse sits directly over the ritual heart of the Aztec empire. When Spanish forces arrived, they dismantled the Templo Mayor and used the rubble to construct the cathedral and the national palace that hem the square today. Every morning, soldiers march out to hoist the flag, continuing a military tradition that has occupied this ground for centuries.
