UAM First Printing House in America

The building at the corner of Moneda and Licenciado Verdad streets features a plaque marking the site of the first printing press in the Americas. Juan Pablos arrived here from Seville in fifteen thirty-nine to operate the press for the bishop Juan de Zumarraga. Printers produced religious manuals and dictionaries in indigenous languages on this spot for decades. The structure later became part of the university, and a heavy stone archway still frames the entrance where those early books first emerged.
