Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven sits on the Zocalo, distinguished by its immense gray stone facade and two towering, uneven bell towers. Workers began building this structure in fifteen seventy-three, right over the ruins of the main temple of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan. They used stones from the destroyed pyramids to construct the foundations. As the soil settled unevenly, the floor of the cathedral eventually became a series of gentle, sloping hills.
