The Plaza de Santo Domingo features a row of arched stone portals known as the Portales de Santo Domingo, where professional letter writers and public typists once held court. Long ago, they drafted legal documents, love letters, and petitions for illiterate citizens who flocked to the square for help. During the Inquisition, the nearby church of Santo Domingo served as the headquarters for the Holy Office. Prisoners faced their trials here, often emerging to hear their sentences read aloud in the plaza before being marched away.
