The Plaza Manuel Gamio sits at the corner of Seminario and Republica de Guatemala, defined by a large glass-covered pit that exposes the remains of a circular Aztec structure. This is the base of the Templo Mayor, the spiritual center of the Mexica empire. In nineteen seventy-eight, a utility worker digging a trench struck a massive stone carving of the moon goddess Coyolxauhqui. That discovery triggered the excavation of the temple ruins that lay beneath the colonial city for centuries.
