Templo Mayor Museum

The Templo Mayor museum is a stark, concrete-clad box that stands directly against the jagged, excavated ruins of the main Aztec temple. For centuries, this site was buried under the colonial expansion of Mexico City, hidden beneath the Zocalo and nearby cathedral. In nineteen seventy-eight, electrical workers digging a trench hit a massive, eight-ton stone disc depicting the dismembered goddess Coyolxauhqui. That accidental strike forced the city to stop and peel back the layers of history to reveal the Great Temple.
