Al Attarine Madrasa

The Al Attarine Madrasa is recognizable by the intricate cedar wood carvings and elaborate zellige tilework covering its courtyard walls. Sultan Abu Said Uthman built this school in the early fourteenth century for students studying at the nearby Al Qarawiyyin University. A merchant once climbed to the top of the minaret to shout an insult at the sultan during construction. The sultan had the man arrested, but spared his life, forcing him to pay for the mosque's final set of carved cedar doors.
