The Mosque and University of al-Qarawiyyin features a green-tiled pyramidal roof and a minaret that dates back to the twelfth century. Fatima al-Fihri, a woman who moved to Fes from Kairouan with her family, founded this site in eight fifty-nine. She used her inheritance to build a mosque, which expanded over centuries into a major center for scholars. Among those who studied here was the philosopher Averroes and the historian Ibn Khaldun, who spent hours in the library’s quiet, arched halls.
