Wynand Fockink Proeflokaal and Spirits

The low wooden building with a facade of dark, weathered timber stands on a corner near the Oude Kerk. Inside, the floor is covered in a thick layer of sand, a tradition maintained since the seventeenth century. While other establishments modernized, this place kept its sawdust floors to absorb the spills and dirt of the centuries. Wynand Fockink established this distillery in sixteen seventy-nine, creating a space where people leaned over the bar to sip genever directly from a filled tulip glass.
