Torensluis

The Torensluis bridge spans the Singel canal with a width that makes it feel more like a city square than a crossing. Built in sixteen forty-eight, it remains the oldest stone bridge in Amsterdam. Below the pavement, the bridge hides a dark, vaulted space that once served as a prison. Prisoners held there could hear the bustle of the city through the cracks in the masonry, while merchants traded directly above their heads for nearly two hundred years.
