Zandhoek

The Zandhoek consists of a row of seventeenth-century merchant houses topped with distinct, stepped gables that overlook the former harbor. These homes were built for wealthy traders who brought sand and timber into the city by ship. In the late seventeen hundreds, a sea captain named Johannes van den Bosch lived here while his ships were being repaired at the nearby docks. He filled his cellar with exotic spices and silks, keeping them dry while his crew scrubbed the decks just outside.
