The Papeneiland café sits on the corner of the Prinsengracht and Brouwersgracht, identified by the faded, mustard-colored paint on its seventeenth-century brick facade. This building once served as a secret tunnel entrance for Catholics in the sixteen hundreds, who used an underground passage to reach an illegal clandestine church hidden in the attic of a neighboring house. Today, the bar retains its original wood paneling and marble floors, serving apple pie to those who crowd into its small, cramped interior.
