Coöperatieve Vereniging "Karthuizerhof" BA

The Karthuizerhof features a deep, quiet courtyard hidden behind a simple brick facade on the Karthuizersstraat. Originally built in the seventeenth century, this site housed a Carthusian monastery until the Reformation forced the monks out. Later, the city repurposed the grounds as an almshouse for widows and the elderly. In the nineteen seventies, the residents fought off a plan to demolish the buildings, opting instead to renovate the complex into a cooperative that persists to this day.
