Sloterdijkerbrug

The Sloterdijkerbrug is a fixed stone bridge spanning the Brouwersgracht, easily identified by the four thick, iron bollards standing at its corners. Its present form dates to the late nineteenth century, replacing an older wooden structure that struggled to support the weight of the city's increasing traffic. Hendrik Petrus Berlage, the architect who defined much of Amsterdam's modern aesthetic, designed the current stone arches and clean masonry lines. He wanted the bridge to handle the heavy transit of horses, carts, and eventually cars.
