The Palmentuin on Prinseneiland is a hidden courtyard garden defined by its dense collection of palm trees that thrive in a sunken, sheltered basin. Originally, this space functioned as an industrial shipyard where wooden merchant vessels were built and repaired in the seventeenth century. When the shipyards eventually closed, local residents transformed the quiet, hollowed-out ground into a private oasis. The iron gate marking the entrance often remains locked, preserving the stillness once required for master shipwrights to focus on their trade.
