Café Chris sits on a corner in the Jordaan with a distinctive dark green wooden exterior and large windows that catch the afternoon light. It opened in sixteen twenty-four, making it the oldest brown café in the neighborhood. When the original owner received his liquor license, the patrons were mostly dockworkers and local laborers. The interior still features its nineteenth-century brass chandelier and the original dark wood paneling, unchanged by the generations of regulars who leaned their elbows on that same heavy bar.
