Restaurant-Café In de Waag

The heavy, brick tower in the center of Nieuwmarkt features five distinct spires rising above a thick stone base. This is the Saint Anthony’s Gate, completed in fourteen eighty-eight as a defensive entrance to Amsterdam. It served as a weigh house for merchants bringing goods into the city by land, where inspectors verified the weight of every shipment. In the seventeenth century, Rembrandt used the upper floors for his anatomy lessons, documenting one of those sessions in his famous painting, The Anatomy Lesson of Doctor Tulp.
