The BLS Interlaken cruise fleet features paddle steamers like the Blümlisalp, recognizable by their churning red paddle wheels and the plume of smoke rising from a central funnel. These ships bridge the two lakes, Brienz and Thun, connecting towns that were once isolated by steep mountain walls. In the early twentieth century, the railway company introduced these vessels to move tourists between mountain rail lines. The captain still navigates the Blümlisalp using a manual steering wheel located on the open upper deck.
