Höhematte Park

The Höhematte is a flat, thirty-five-acre meadow trapped between the hotels and shops of central Interlaken. Its defining feature is a permanent, unobstructed view of the Jungfrau mountain, protected by a deed from eighteen sixty that forbids any permanent construction on this land. The Augustinian monks of the local monastery originally owned these fields, but a group of hotel owners purchased the site in the nineteenth century to ensure their guests could always see the Alps from their front doors.
