The Grand Hotel Beau-Rivage stands along the banks of the Aare River, marked by a sprawling, cream-colored facade and a series of arched windows that reflect off the water. Built in eighteen seventy-three, it provided a luxury anchor for visitors arriving by the newly completed Bernese Oberland Railway. While guests once arrived by horse-drawn carriage to secure rooms with views of the Jungfrau massif, Lord Byron famously stayed in a precursor building on this site, obsessing over the glacial valley before the hotel existed.
