The İzmir Palas stands as a tall apartment block clad in weathered white stone, easily spotted by the intricate, geometric wrought iron balconies that wrap around its corner. Built in the nineteen thirties, the building arrived during a period when architects in Istanbul moved toward clean lines and functionality. It housed members of the Turkish Republic's emerging elite who favored the European style of life. One resident, a retired diplomat, kept a grand piano in his living room that filled the stairwell with nightly jazz.
