These structures remain from an era when fire frequently reshaped Istanbul, leading residents to favor flexible wood over brittle stone. When the great fire of nineteen eighty-six threatened the neighborhood, local residents formed a human chain to pass buckets from the sea, saving these specific homes. They represent a neighborhood philosophy of collective preservation that persists among the modern residents.
