Church of Ayios Yeorgios

The Church of Ayios Yeorgios is defined by the high, vine-covered stone wall that shields its courtyard from the street, punctuated by a modest iron gate. Built in eighteen twenty-one on the site of a much older Byzantine chapel, the structure serves the local Greek Orthodox community. After the original building burned down, Sultan Mahmud the Second granted permission for its reconstruction. Inside the quiet courtyard, the remains of the nineteenth-century cemetery sit alongside the stone church, separated from the neighborhood’s bustle.
