The Mihrimah Sultan Mosque sits on a rise in Üsküdar, its massive dome flanked by two slender minarets. It is the work of the architect Mimar Sinan, commissioned in the fifteen forties by Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent for his favorite daughter. Mihrimah wanted a monument to her name, and she chose this spot for its visibility from the city across the water. On her birthday, legend says the sun sets behind this mosque's minaret as the moon rises behind the other.
