The Yeni Valide Mosque is defined by the elaborate, swirling stone carvings on its entrance gates and the wide, low-slung dome that seems to flatten against the Üsküdar skyline. Sultan Ahmet the Third commissioned this complex in seventeen oh nine for his mother, Emetullah Rabia Gülnûş Sultan. She chose this site to overlook the Bosporus, and her tomb sits in an open-air enclosure attached to the courtyard, surrounded by delicate metal screens that allow rain and sun to reach the marble sarcophagus.
