Adelaide Crescent

The white stucco curves of Adelaide Crescent follow the bend of the road, creating a concave sweep that faces the English Channel. Decimus Burton designed this crescent in the eighteen thirties, moving away from the rigid lines of earlier Regency squares to catch the sea air. Wealthy families moved here to escape London, filling these high-ceilinged rooms with mahogany and velvet. Baron Rothschild once held the lease on number twenty-four, keeping a household that catered to the nineteenth-century social elite.
