The flint-faced tower of Saint Nicholas Church sits on the high ground above the Brighton seafront. It functioned as the parish church for the tiny fishing village of Brighthelmstone for centuries, long before the town became a crowded seaside resort. During the seventeenth century, a Dutch raid burned most of the village to the ground, but this stone structure remained standing. It is the oldest building in the city, holding the stone font that dates back to the twelfth century.
