It serves as the headquarters for a group that once dominated the town’s economy. By the mid-nineteenth century, hundreds of local families relied on the daily catch of mackerel and herring. The society functioned as a friendly club, collecting dues to provide funeral costs and financial relief for members injured while hauling heavy nets from the freezing English Channel.
