Madeira Lift

historic

The Madeira Lift features a distinct iron and glass structure painted in bright green and cream, nestled directly into the chalk cliff face. Built in eighteen ninety, this Victorian elevator connects the upper level of Marine Parade to the beach below. It served as a vital convenience for bathers and strollers who otherwise faced a steep, grueling climb back to the top. Local engineers designed it to handle the immense pressure of the cliff, though salt air constantly challenged its iron frame.
