Volk's Electric Railway

The narrow gauge tracks of Volk's Electric Railway hug the shingle beach, distinguished by cars that hum along the shoreline on third-rail power. Magnus Volk built this line in eighteen eighty-three, making it the oldest operating electric railway in the world. When he first opened the line, local residents feared the electricity would cause their horses to bolt or give shocks to pedestrians on the promenade. Volk proved them wrong by operating the carriages safely for decades, eventually extending the tracks toward Black Rock.
