Palmeira Square

Palmeira Square features two grand, opposing crescents of cream-colored stucco houses that face inward toward a central lawn. This architecture defines the final expansion of the Brunswick estate, completed in the mid nineteenth century. In the late eighteen eighties, the square became the site of a frantic political struggle when a local woman named Sarah Jane Moore tried to force the sale of the gardens to developers. Residents successfully blocked her by purchasing the land themselves to protect the view of the sea.
