The cast iron columns of Shelter Hall support a heavy, curved roof that marks the intersection of Kings Road and West Street. Built in the late eighteen eighties, this structure served as a weather-proof viewing gallery for Victorian crowds to watch the beach without abandoning their hats to the wind. During the winter of nineteen twenty-four, a massive storm tore through Brighton, and the sea surged high enough to smash the original ironwork, forcing a complete rebuild of the lower promenade.
