The Grand Brighton is defined by its long, curved white facade and heavy, ornate iron balconies facing the English Channel. When it opened in eighteen sixty-four, it offered wealthy visitors a level of luxury previously unseen in the seaside town. Architects designed the hotel to provide every guest a view of the sea from their room. In nineteen eighty-four, the Irish Republican Army targeted this building during the Conservative Party conference, resulting in a bombing that severely damaged the upper floors.
