Mitre Square

Mitre Square is a small, quiet quadrangle that hides a much deeper history beneath its modern facade. Long before it became a landmark of Victorian infamy, this ground served as the site of the Holy Trinity Priory, a significant Augustinian religious house founded in the early twelfth century by Queen Matilda. By the time Henry the Eighth dissolved the monastery in the sixteenth century, the site had functioned as a center of religious life in London for over four hundred years. Today, the square sits approximately where the monks once walked in their cloisters, a fact that remains largely invisible beneath the modern office developments that have replaced the old warehouses.
