The Roman Fort you are approaching was built around one hundred and twenty AD, long before the famous city wall that later enclosed London. Unlike the battle-hardened fortifications found along Hadrian’s Wall, this twelve-acre site was designed to house the ceremonial guard of the Roman Governor of Britain. It functioned more like a high-status military headquarters than a frontline defensive outpost, accommodating roughly one thousand soldiers who rotated through the garrison. Its placement on the northern edge of the early city signaled the importance of the town as a rising administrative capital rather than just a trade settlement.
