The Rosary (house)

Long ago, this area just east of the southern end of London Bridge was the site of a moated royal residence known as The Rosary. King Edward the Second began constructing this pleasure house around the year 1324, leasing the land from a local noblewoman named Lady Agnes de Dunley. While the king visited the construction site several times, the building was primarily a timber hall that likely never saw full completion before his death in 1327. Archaeologists have since discovered remnants of its stone walls and defensive buttresses beneath the modern structures that occupy this part of Southwark today.
