Lauderdale Road Spanish & Portuguese Synagogue

The Lauderdale Road Synagogue opened in 1896 to serve the growing number of Sephardi Jewish families who had moved from the older, historic districts of the City of London to the quieter, more residential streets of Maida Vale. Designed by architects Davis and Emanuel in a distinctive Byzantine Revival style, the building is defined by its shallow central dome and grand arched recesses. While it was built to accommodate a population that had moved away from the medieval streets of the East End, it remains a vital link to the oldest Jewish community in England, which first formed in the seventeenth century.
