Baker Street robbery

In September of 1971, this street became the site of one of the most audacious heists in British criminal history. A gang of professional thieves rented a leather goods shop called Le Sac, located just two doors down from the Lloyds Bank branch. Over the course of several weekends, they meticulously dug a forty-foot tunnel from the basement of that shop, passing underneath a neighboring restaurant, to breach the floor of the bank vault from below. Their plan was a direct homage to the Sherlock Holmes short story titled The Red-Headed League, where criminals tunnel into a bank from a nearby cellar. Before leaving the scene, the burglars even left a taunting message on the wall that read, Let Sherlock Holmes try to solve this.
