The square was built between eighteen ten and eighteen fifteen on the Portman Estate, and its builder, David Porter, named it in honor of Elizabeth Montagu. As a child, Porter worked as a chimney sweep and was a beneficiary of Lady Montagu's annual charity parties for the city's young laborers.
