Riverside Walk Gardens

park garden

You are standing in a space that occupies a site of significant, albeit grim, historical transition. This triangular garden sits on land that once held the formidable Millbank Penitentiary, a massive star-shaped prison that dominated the riverbank in the nineteenth century. It served as a primary holding facility for convicts awaiting deportation to Australia. The design of the original mid-sixties park built here paid homage to that past by incorporating a hexagonal layout, directly mimicking the unique shape of the old prison walls.
