Red Lion (theatre)

The Red Lion represents a major turning point in English entertainment history, as it was the first known purpose-built playhouse in London since the era of the Roman Empire. Constructed in fifteen sixty-seven on what was then farmland, the venue was the brainchild of a grocer named John Brayne. Before this structure appeared, traveling theatrical companies had to perform in whatever temporary spaces they could find, such as inn courtyards or private halls. Brayne changed that model by commissioning a permanent, dedicated stage that featured a raised platform and a gallery for spectators.
