You are standing at the heart of the Boundary Estate, a site that fundamentally changed how Londoners think about their homes. Beneath your feet lies a literal monument to the past. The central mound of Arnold Circus, topped with its ornate bandstand, is constructed entirely from the rubble and soil of the Old Nichol, the notorious slum that once stood here. In the late nineteenth century, this was considered the most dangerous and dilapidated corner of the East End, a place where poverty and disease were rampant. When the London County Council decided to clear the area starting in eighteen ninety, they did not just sweep away the old houses; they buried the remains of that dark history directly beneath this garden.
