Mildmay Mission Hospital

The Mildmay Mission Hospital began in 1866 during a devastating cholera outbreak that swept through the notorious Old Nichol slums. Two deaconesses, trained in nursing by Catherine Pennefather, volunteered to enter this dangerous district to care for the sick when authorities and others would not go. Their work established the enduring principle of the mission: to go where the need is greatest and to stay as long as they are needed.
