Shoreditch Town Hall

Shoreditch Town Hall stands on Old Street as a relic of Victorian ambition. Completed in 1866, it was designed to be the grandest vestry hall in all of London. Its builders were driven by a philosophy of progress, immortalized by the motto More Light, More Power, which is still visible throughout the structure today. This slogan celebrated the borough's early adoption of electricity, powered by a local refuse destructor that burned trash to light the streets. The building once sat on the site of Fuller's Hospital, an old almshouse for poor women that dated back to the late sixteenth century.
