The station you are approaching stands on a site that has been a focal point for railway engineering since the mid nineteenth century. It sits directly over the remnants of the Bishopsgate Goods Yard, a massive freight hub that handled goods coming into London from East Anglia for decades. A catastrophic fire in nineteen sixty four destroyed the original upper level structures of this yard, leaving the site derelict for over forty years until this modern station was constructed to replace the old Shoreditch underground stop.
