Blackwall Buildings

The Blackwall Buildings were a collection of four-story residential blocks constructed in eighteen ninety along what was then called Thomas Street. They stand as a rare example of a railway company acting as an unlikely landlord. The Great Eastern Railway built these flats not by choice, but to fulfill a specific parliamentary mandate that required them to provide housing for the working-class families they had displaced during the massive construction of the nearby Bishopsgate goods yard.
