Tweeddale Court hides behind a heavy stone archway on the Canongate, marked by a low, vaulted passage that feels like a shortcut into another century. This seventeenth century townhouse once belonged to the first Marquess of Tweeddale, and later served as the headquarters for the British Linen Bank. In seventeen fifty-two, the building saw a violent robbery when a bank teller was attacked by an unknown assailant who vanished with a large sum of gold, leaving the city in a frantic, month-long search.
