Greyfriars Bobby Statue

A small bronze terrier sits on a granite plinth near the corner of Candlemaker Row. This is Greyfriars Bobby. Local stories claim he guarded his master’s grave in the nearby kirkyard for fourteen years after the man died in eighteen fifty-eight. People visit this spot because of that persistent loyalty. The statue itself went up in eighteen seventy-three, funded by a philanthropist named Baroness Burdett-Coutts. She chose this exact location so the dog would forever face the gates where he waited.
