The Royal Circus forms a perfect, grassy oval enclosed by high, pale stone townhouses. Designed by William Playfair in eighteen twenty, it replaced an earlier plan to build a square, which would have lacked the continuous, sweeping curves seen here today. The architect intended these homes for Edinburgh's professional elite, but the economic crash of eighteen twenty-five halted construction for several years. When work resumed, the original grandeur remained, anchored by the uniform, neoclassical columns framing every doorway around the entire circle.
