The Witches Well is a small cast-iron fountain built into the retaining wall near the entrance to Edinburgh Castle. It features a bronze relief of a serpent, a foxglove, and a digitalis plant, framed by the faces of witches. This spot marks the site where over three hundred people were executed for witchcraft between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Among them was Janet Horne, the last woman burned as a witch in Scotland, who allegedly claimed her daughter had webbed feet as proof of her pact.
